Room 8's First Tadpoles

This morning when I walked into the classroom I saw the tank by the window and I thought Miss Gentil was getting the tank ready for when the tadpoles arrive. Then I walked closer and saw the tadpoles swimming around. I felt excited and I was very impressed because I didn't think they were going to arrive until next Monday.

I watched them until the bell rang. They look like baby eels and they swim like fish. I put a pinch of fish food into the tank and they went crazy. They swam up and nibbled on the fish flakes.

We bought the tadpoles for Adventure Learning so my group could learn about how tadpoles turn into frogs. We are also going to learn how to create a good environment for frogs. One afternoon when I was waiting for the bus we ordered them on Trade Me. They cost $1 each so we got ten for $10. One of them already has legs and his name is Lewis. I can't wait for Lewis to turn into a frog. I think that will take 8 more weeks until he is a frog. We are going to make a diary about the tadpoles to keep track of how they grow.

I like your new tadpoles that are in your class. They look cool by the window. Frogs and tadpoles are my favourite animals. I wish I had a tadpoles tank. What do you like best about your new tadpoles?

    1. That we can watch them swim around while we're learning. They also like to suck on the side of the tank. From Harley.

    2. To Harley,
Do you think they are trying to clean their tank when they suck on the sides? Because we know of some fish that do this.

  5. To Harley,

What are you going to do with all of the tadpoles when they turn into frogs? Will you keep all ten or will you put some back into nature? You are lucky to have tadpoles at school. What do you want to learn about them? Can you tell me how high they can leap when they turn into frogs.

    1. We're going to put them back into nature because I don't think it is fair to keep them in a tank forever. Miss Gentil is going to bring in a bigger tank for when they turn into frogs. I want to learn how to look after them and know how to build a great environment for them to live in. I will tell you how high they jump when I find out.

    2. To Harley,
Can you post some photos of when they have turned into frogs and when you put them back into nature. How will you get them back into nature?
We think a great environment might bring some of nature into their tank.
      Don't forget to feed them!

  7. Harley, we raised tadpoles in my 3rd grade classroom in the US last year! It was so so neat to watch them turn into frogs! As they get bigger, you have to decrease the water level and make sure they have a way to get onto land. We used a big, flat rock, and floating lily pads. Eventually, they'll develop lungs and need to breath air.

We also released them back into the wild, it was a sad day, but they were ready! :)
